As an automotive photographer, I had the opportunity to capture the unique atmosphere of the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2026 from trackside locations around the circuit. From the build-up in the paddock and the intensity of the pit lane to dramatic overtakes at night and emotional celebrations at the chequered flag, these images tell the story of one of the most demanding races in motorsport.
Combining permanent race facilities with public roads, the 13.626-kilometre Circuit de la Sarthe creates one of the most challenging environments for teams and drivers. Over 24 relentless hours, competitors battle changing weather conditions, traffic management, fatigue and mechanical reliability while maintaining extraordinary levels of performance.
Hypercar Battle: Toyota Returns to the Top at Le Mans
The headline story of the 2026 24 Hours of Le Mans was Toyota’s return to the top step of the podium. After Ferrari claimed victory in the previous three editions, Toyota Gazoo Racing reclaimed the famous trophy with the No. 7 Toyota GR010 Hybrid driven by Kamui Kobayashi, Mike Conway and Dutch driver Nyck de Vries. The trio completed 381 laps and secured Toyota’s sixth overall victory at Le Mans, finishing just 10.9 seconds ahead of BMW after an intense battle that lasted until the final hour.
BMW M Team WRT delivered one of its strongest performances in the Hypercar era, with Robin Frijns, René Rast and Sheldon van der Linde finishing second in the No. 20 BMW M Hybrid V8. The sister No. 15 BMW started from pole position after Cadillac lost its fastest qualifying time due to a penalty, but its race ended prematurely following electrical problems after an earlier puncture.
Toyota’s sister No. 8 car, driven by Sébastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa, completed the overall podium despite losing time during the night due to repairs to the front-left brake assembly.
Cadillac looked like a genuine contender for victory throughout the first half of the race. The No. 38 Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA entry led for extended periods and held a commanding position overnight before suffering a devastating power steering failure that forced the car into retirement. The No. 12 Cadillac ultimately finished fourth after a consistent and competitive performance.
Ferrari arrived at Le Mans aiming for a fourth consecutive victory but struggled to match the pace of Toyota, BMW and Cadillac. The No. 51 Ferrari AF Corse finished fifth, while the No. 50 Ferrari retired before the finish.
LMP2 Winners: Inter Europol Dominates
The LMP2 category returned to the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2026 with one of the strongest entry lists in recent years. Polish team Inter Europol Competition delivered a commanding performance, securing a memorable one-two finish in class.
The No. 43 Inter Europol Oreca claimed victory after maintaining impressive pace, consistency and reliability throughout the race. The team’s success underlined the importance of strategy and flawless execution in endurance racing. Inter Europol’s victory marked back-to-back Le Mans wins in the LMP2 category.
The LMP2 race featured several lead changes, intense battles and late-race drama as teams navigated heavy traffic among the Hypercar and LMGT3 fields.
LMGT3 Victory for Corvette
In the LMGT3 category, TF Sport secured victory with the No. 33 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R driven by Ben Keating, Nicky Catsburg and Jonny Edgar. The Corvette crew built its success through strong pace during the night and error-free execution over the full 24 hours.
The LMGT3 field provided some of the closest racing of the entire event, featuring manufacturers including Porsche, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Lexus, Mercedes-AMG and BMW. Multiple lead changes throughout the race kept the outcome uncertain until the closing hours.
One of the most dramatic moments came during the nineteenth hour when Ayhancan Güven crashed the No. 91 Manthey Porsche after a sudden steering failure at the first Mulsanne chicane. The impact caused significant damage and triggered a lengthy safety car period that reshuffled strategies across all categories. Fortunately, the driver escaped without injury.
Major Incidents and Retirements
The 2026 24 Hours of Le Mans delivered its usual mix of triumph and heartbreak. Mechanical failures once again demonstrated that endurance racing rewards reliability as much as outright speed.
Among the most notable retirements was the No. 38 Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA, which lost a potential overall victory due to power steering problems after leading for much of the race. BMW’s pole-sitting No. 15 entry also retired following electrical issues, while the No. 50 Ferrari AF Corse and No. 17 Genesis Magma Racing entries failed to reach the finish.
The race featured two major safety car interventions, including the extended neutralisation following the Manthey Porsche crash. These interruptions compressed the field and created a tense final phase in which strategy, tyre management and traffic handling became decisive factors.
The Unique Atmosphere of Le Mans
Beyond the racing itself, the 24 Hours of Le Mans offers a visual spectacle unlike any other motorsport event. The transition from daylight to darkness transforms the circuit into a moving canvas of glowing brake discs, illuminated pit garages and headlights cutting through the night.
